Teddington singer Art Wood, brother of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie, died last Friday, November 3, from prostate cancer at the age of 69.

Art, who's full name was Arthur, was well-known throughout the borough for his singing and performed at a number of concerts with musician friends.

His widow Angie told the Richmond and Twickenham Times: "Music was a big part of his life, he was always arranging things. People would ask him to do gigs, Hampton Community College this year asked him to do one there, they had one last year, and he performed at Radnor Gardens three or four times.

"He would spend ages ringing people up and seeing if they were free. He did that quite a lot and he did enjoy it, he would make time to do it and he would get people together.

"He had so many different musical friends that if one was busy he could always get another one, they all seemed to enjoy working with him."

Art was involved in the Twickenham music scene in the early 1960s forming a band called the Art Wood Combo, who changed their name to The Artwoods.

The five-piece-group, Art, John Lord, who went on to form Deep Purple, Keef Hartley, Derek Griffiths and Don Wilson, who was later replaced by Malcolm Pool, released nine singles, one EP, an LP and had one hit with I Take What I Want, which entered the Melody Maker charts in 1966.

After the band split, Art became a graphic artist and while working in Southall met Angie in 1984.

They married in 1990 and have lived in Atbara Road for 15 years.

He had one son, Simon, from a previous relationship and two grandchildren.

He found out he had cancer in April and Angie said his friends rallied round.

"Since he died people have been so lovely, fantastic, the phone just never stops ringing. I have had lots of cards in the last couple of days, and flowers.

Derek Griffiths, who played guitar in The Artwoods, added: "Art had no ego whatsoever, that's what I loved about him.

"He was a really nice guy and he will be very sadly missed."
