Former New Look employee admits theft
A former supervisor at Kingston's New Look narrowly avoided jail after admitting stealing more than £1,000.
Kingston Magistrates' Court heard yesterday that Stephanie Agaren, 21, of Stretton Road, Richmond, had been employed by the clothing store, based in the Bentall Centre, for four years.
Between November last year and January this year, she put 25 false refunds through the till to the value of £1,031.
Agaren was caught after a branch inspection uncovered the theft and she was sacked. A probation report read to the court said Agaren had been having a "tough time" at work dealing with aggressive customers and the theft may have been a way of "getting back" at the management.
The report said Agaren had not used the money to "furnish a lavish lifestyle" but to take her sister, who suffers from osteoporosis, out.
Mitigating, defence solicitor Mr Ovais Kadri said Agaren, a Richmond and Kingston College graduate had lost her good character and would now struggle to get a job. Magistrate Stephanie Lippiatt said the decision not to send Agaren to prison was "borderline".
"This was a very serious offence where you defrauded the company you worked for with so many offences over a long period of time," she said. "I hope you have learned a lesson from this."
Agaren was ordered to complete 270 hours of unpaid work, repay the money to New Look and pay £70 costs.
