Firefighters use cameras to tackle Hampton Wick blaze

Conscientious firefighters spent more than two hours making a Hampton Wick building safe after builders accidentally set fire to a main beam.

Firefighters were called to the converted flats on Church Grove yesterday morning at 11.37am after the builders - who had managed to put out the main beam fire - reported seeing smoke.

Concerned the blaze could have crept inside a cavity wall Kingston watch manager Geff Hall used a specialist camera and thermal imaging to check the fire was out.

"Because there was still smoke we needed to make sure the fire was out and wasn't in a cavity wall. If we hadn't there could have been burning embers inside the wall which could have dropped down," he explained.

Once satisfied the site was safe the firefighters from Surbiton, Kingston, Twickenham and Heston's specialist unit shored up effected parts of the building.
