Dog cheats death in Feltham dual carriageway drama

A dog that was dangerously dodging traffic on the high-speed A312 near Feltham was rescued by a brave animal ambulance driver last week.
Tracey Brown, who works for The Blue Cross animal charity, was on her way to the charity's animal adoption centre in Southampton last Tuesday when she noticed the pooch attempting to cross the busy dual carriageway, where vehicles reach speeds of up to 50mph.
"I was driving along when I noticed the dog," said Tracey, who lives in Dinsmore Road in Balham.
"She kept darting in front of the cars as though she was trying to cross. I knew that if I didn't stop and catch her she could be killed."
The brave 34-year-old pulled over and tried to get the attention of the animal - a German shepherd and border collie crossbreed - by using pet toys which were in the ambulance.
"It was very touch and go if she'd run out in front of cars. Being an absolute animal lover, I would have tried to stop traffic if she had.
"I kept her on the grass verge by approaching her slowly but if I'd gone too quickly and frightened her she could have run into the road."
Eventually the dog came over to Tracey, who got her into the vehicle and took her to the Blue Cross animal hospital in Victoria.

Nurses there discovered her identifying microchip and found out her name was Scooby, but because the contact details were out of date, her family was only found two days later when a local dog warden said a family had been in touch about a missing dog, whose description matched Scooby's.

They live about half a mile away from where she was found.
"When Scooby's family arrived it brought a tear to my eye," added Tracey. "She was so happy to see them but kept running back to me as if to say thank you."
Scooby's owner, Lisa Hannington, from Glebe Way, Hanworth, said she noticed the pet was gone at about 10am that morning, after realising her garden fence had been kicked in and left open.
"That's how we think she got out," explained the 39-year-old mum-of-three.
"We searched the area, called the police and dog wardens and spoke to neighbours but no one had seen her at all.
"It was quite frightening for us so it was such a relief when the Blue Cross got in touch with us. We were horrified to find out that Scooby had been so close to danger when she got out of our garden. We are really grateful to the charity for returning her safely.
"In future we will make sure she is always wearing her ID tag when outside, her microchip details are updated and do everything we can to make our garden more secure so she won't be at risk again.
"Since Scooby's returned we've donated money to the Blue Cross and have all been spoiling her rotten!"
