Vibrantly stylish Retro Bistrot, in Teddington High Street, boasts an authentic and creative French menu, with so many intriguing dishes it was almost impossible to decide what to order.
The friendly and attentive owner, Vincent Gerbeau, spotted our umming and aahhing, and suggested we let him take over the selection of dishes. We were certainly not disappointed with his choices.
The pumpkin cakes with edamame relish, accompanied by radish salad and saffron mayonnaise, were simply delicious, and the seared king scallops with leeks were complemented perfectly by the crisp white wine, also chosen by Vincent. The scallops were also served with haggis tempura, which was packed with flavour.
The bold and flavoursome slow roast pork belly with spicy red cabbage and apple chutney was excellent, and perfectly harmonised with the robust red wine recommended by Vincent.
For dessert, the addition of peanut ice cream to chocolate fondant was a very welcome twist on a traditional classic.
Vincent was an entertaining, obliging and warm host, and the well executed Gallic dishes made for a hugely enjoyable dining experience.
