Leatherhead swimmers star at nationals

Leatherhead swimmers Hannah Shore and David Andrews recorded victories in the Speedo League final at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, last weekend.

Although Leatherhead finished last of the 10 teams in the B final, their squad featured a number of swimmers making their finals' debut who can only benefit from the experience.

Shore turned on the power to win the 100m freestyle in (1:00.28) as well as earning fifth when she swam up an age group in the open 100m freestyle.

Andrews finished nearly 1.5 seconds clear of the field in winning the boys' 100m breaststroke (1:12.31).

There were silver medals for Stuart McCrea in the open 100m backstroke, Andrew Norman, who competed in six events, in the boys' U13 100m butterfly and Grace Archer in the girls' 15 years 100m butterfly.

Daniel Malamud took bronze in the boys' 10-11 years 50m butterfly.

In the relays, the girls' U15 freestyle team of Shore, Charlotte Robertson, Rebecca Cooke and Charlotte Hobbs finished a very close second behind Bournemouth.

Andrews swam the breaststroke leg for the boys' 15 years medley relay along with Norman, Tyler Hampton and Liam Mellett and came a close second.

There was disappointment for Simon Churchman, Chris Ashton, Will Philpot, McCrea, David Ashton and Matt Kidd who were beaten in the men's open squadron for the first time in three years, finishing a close second behind Ealing.

McCrea, Sam Crowther, Philpot and Kidd were third in the men's open relay. Shore, Claire Abraham, Robertson, Hobbs, Cooke and Charlotte Harman were third in the women's open squadron relay.
