A commemorative garden dedicated to the memory of a former governor has been unveiled at a Twickenham school.

The Chill Zone was opened at Heathfield Junior School on Monday in memory of Ken Saunders, who died suddenly last year.

It has a sea theme, with sea creature mosaics created by students covering the walls of the wooden structure. It also features undercover protection from sun and rain, a soft ground cover and seating.

The space was designed by school staff and governors and will be used for outside learning and quiet activities during playtime.

A hedge has also been planted in the playground and will double as an educational resource to teach pupils about nature.

Both projects were jointly funded by the school and Richmond Council.

Headteacher of the Cobbett Road school Paul Clayton said: “We are thrilled with this new project, which is a very exciting addition to the school’s range of facilities and a fitting tribute to our former governor, Ken Saunders.

“We are also very pleased with our recent Ofsted report which recognised that the school has made good progress this year.”
